Course Description
This subject introduces learning theory as a foundation for the design of learning technology interventions. Starting with a historical approach, this subject will cover behavioral, cognitive, social, and biological theories of learning, with their instructional implications. The role of this subject is to provide both a support for the process of design and as grounding for extensions to learning theory that occurs in your other classes. A brief introduction to analysis of research will be included, as well as training on using human subjects in research.

Learning Outcomes
- Articulate the relationships between theory, research, instructional and learning strategies and practice, consider the impact of technology on those relationships, and examine the relevance of newer and older approaches to training and learning.
- Be introduced to new discoveries in neuroscience and cognitive science and examine the relevance of major learning theories in light of these discoveries.
- Through individual and group effort, identify, compare and contrast, major learning theories and evaluate related instructional and learning strategies.
- Through group effort, and using an applied rubric you will analyze a learning object such as a course, tutorial or program, with respect to increase the probability that the learning objectives will be met.
- Groups and individuals will apply a provided rubric developed with findings from cognitive science and neuroscience research to evaluate various learning theories and instructional and learning strategies related to learning situations.
- Demonstrate an awareness of social and cultural influences on learning.
- Examine emerging theories and strategies and their potential to advance learning, training and education through application of existing and future technological innovations.
- With your group, analyze, critique and evaluate a research study related to a learning theory or strategy using the provided Critical Article Analysis Job Aid.
- Each individual will complete required Human Subjects Research (HSR) training.
- Using a provided rubric, each individual doing a Capstone project will develop an initial draft Capstone proposal.
