How To Video
To complete this project, I used a combination of a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (front and rear cameras) with a steadying MIMO tripod and a camera tripod. The steading tripod was rad- but it was the first time I had used it. I’m looking forward to using it more. I got some shots that didn’t make it in that were just beautiful- it was the perfect light for panning over the flowers and filming bees pollenating.
I did a lot of editing when I was younger- I loved creating videos. It’s been nice to rediscover it- and see how far the tools have come. However, I again overestimated my speed when it comes to these projects- I should have started over the weekend. I spent about 2.5 hours said and done shooting and editing the video and about 20 minutes writing the script. I tried to get youtube to do the “auto caption” but I couldn’t find that - so I just uploaded my script and let youtube do the work, which resulted in inaccuracies I had to fix manually. I used a Camtasia preset for the title which was incredibly easy.
Script:
Hi! My name is Aaron, and today I’m going to be showing you how I prune my tomato plants. As you can see, these suckers have grown almost as tall as me! I love it when they get huge like this, but there are a few problems that start to happen. Let’s dive in!
Fungus thrives when the leaves are close together like this at the base of the plant- that will eventually kill them! I come through and remove all of the large green leaves here.
These flowers at the top are great… until they turn into fruit and snap off the top of the plant- that! I’ll come through and start pruning back some of the top growth - especially these new stems. I’ll take everything back to the top of the cage, maybe a few inches above. That way, when the stems set fruit, they can rest on the cage.
Before I go - you don’t have to prune your tomatoes at all - you can let them run wild if you have space and you don’t mind them dying off a little earlier or you live in a drier climate with less fungal issues. Happy gardening!
